Giving it all away - yay!

Finally, I've sent out the extra money raised that's going towards building Well #2 with Well Wishers!!! Meanwhile, I hope Well #1 is being taken care of by Charity:Water since the campaign closed at the end of September. Also, the donations page and final sum donated to both organisations has been updated.

According to my excel spreadsheet, the actual amount raised from the three month campaign was AU$6,679.90 + US$1,722 (plus $340 people have given me for ingredients and labour!). Unfortunately, $107.28 went towards covering bank transaction fees and approximately $150 was lost in the sh!tty exchange rates at the time :( and that's why I've decided to put the extra money raised with Well Wishers. I've given it all away now, off my chest, moving on!!!

So, I managed to pull through the last challenge of making my first wedding cake and using fondant....
It was a fun process although daunting as I was basically just making things up as I go and having lack of time to do anything (working during the day!) I was lucky nothing went drastically wrong the night before the big day.

Here's a spoiler process photo compilation taken throughout the night... zzzzzz

I'm waiting for the professional shots from the wedding to do a proper post of the cake/wedding.

I don't remember much of the actual wedding, just have a few photos to prove I was there as I was basically a sleepy zombie having done an all nighter. I realised I'm seriously getting too old to go 30 hours without sleep, my body is still recovering from that.

Thank you Jesse and Annie for letting me be a part of your special day!

Pro Procrastinator

there's my ugly feet chillaxing :)

So it's been another few weeks gone by... and there was suppose to be wedding cake samples made and mock-ups of the real thing for the bride and groom (and for myself), except I have been doing what normal people do on the weekends - catching up on housework, catching up with friends, going to the beach, to the park and making sure I get 8 hours sleep each night.

First sunny day in months!

Anyway, I do feel quite bad that I took forever to get my ass back into the kitchen. But it's not like I haven't been thinking about the wedding cake. It's been on my mind. I've been searching for a suitable cake stand, ordered numerous books on the topic, purchased a heap load of equipment (for my own pleasure), going through tonnes of images for inspiration, visiting craft stores and even hardware stores to source stuff.

The stress is coming back. The wedding is right around the corner. The bride and groom decided to trust me with their cake, I apologised for not having anything to show but I promise to show up with a wedding cake on the day! lol......

I tested the chocolate fudge cake recipe and baked the red velvet cake for the first time (I finally know what it tastes like!)... except they were both extremely sweet, and after talking to the baking supplies shop lady, I realised being in Australia has its disadvantages. We are pretty much limited to using ganache as filling for the cake unlike in the UK or US where people are more worried that their cake might freeze. Here, everything is melting, on a daily basis.... so my tester cake, the one that I filled with cream cheese frosting/buttercream and covered in fondant didn't really work out. I was also surprised by how intense powdered food colouring is (I had grape purple from 1/2 tsp of that stuff! so had to really dilute it back down )...

I seem to blabbering, does anyone even care?! (I'm only updating coz I saw I'm still getting a few stray visitors in the past two weeks)........

first attempt at fondant icing... all a bit wonky and mushy
I didn't take photos of stuff with my sticky hands, just these mediocre fondant iced midget tester pieces which was applied under humid/hot conditions (damn summer) so everything was just difficult to handle..... luckily I did try it out with the cream cheese filling, now I know not to use it as the cake will be out in the sun... ganache is going to have to do it on its own. I also found out what fondant is like....

Hopefully... all goes well (jesse/annie if you're reading this DON'T WORRY! it won't look like this on the day!), I'm going to have to dramatically decrease the sugar ratio of these cake recipes for the asian crowd, although they did say it doesn't matter how it taste but it needs to look good...... don't think I'll be sleeping much the night before the wedding....

Going to test out white chocolate fondant and flower pastes in the nights to come... :))))

Lots of Sugar, Flour & Butter later...

a random almond pear tart photo I forgot to post up...

The Belated Campaign Finale Post
I really wanted to go back and review the amount of SUGAR, BUTTER and FLOUR I've used up in the three months of baking just so I can have a cool title to the finale post... but being disorganised as I am it didn't happen obviously, time wise I'd rather spend it on.... more sleep!

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end
I have finally made it to the end of the longest-bake-sale-ever... it certainly feels like it's been going on forever to me! Some of you may be wondering, what next? At the moment, I'm just really enjoying time off baking, and looking forward to making my first wedding cake order in a month's time which requires planning and research and testing and testing... coz I've never made one before!!! and it's suppose to be the one cake you're not suppose to stuff up in your life... so I'm quite nervous about it. I'm also constantly reminding myself to go into sugar/baking rehab soon in the hope to one day be able to fit into my clothes again... the constant rainy weather is not helping :(

But before everyone goes on with their lives and forget about me...
Let's have a quick recap on what happened in July, August and September 2010!

In 90 days, the total amount raised was, drum roll please...
roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll roll ......

US$5022 in just over a month and an extra A$2635 after I stopped baking everyday.
Hip-Hip Hooooray!
that's nearly one and a half wells that will potentially serve 375 people for the next 20 years! Sweet sweet numbers! Yeah, and I did it just by baking everyday, how I've proved all the skeptics wrong! (including myself).

another random pic of carrot cake just to prettify this post
Not only did I exceeded my initial goal in record time, I raised another $2635 which will go towards building a second well with Well Wishers. That's coz I don't want to risk losing any more cash donations to the black hole of foreign exchange and international transaction fees!  (Hello charity:water if you're reading this, you might want to consider setting up in Australia?) I even had to turn down a few cake orders in order to stay alive. Or else, I guess it would've been possible to raise enough to build 2 wells! I've learnt to know my limits...

So what did I get out of it all?
I decided it was just easier to donate all baking related costs even after I reached my initial US$5000 goal, cos it makes sense, the return from my input is worth it. This is probably the best value for money birthday gift I can buy for myself anyway. I have everything I need already and money is something I can make up for in due time while some things can't wait! (okay, so the electricity bills were shockingly high, and my holiday has to postpone...) still, you know, it's just money, and I'm usually not this kind of a person, but I placed myself at the point of no return. Besides, PEOPLE ARE DYING FROM THIRST!

The experiences I've gained through this campaign has all been positive, .................okay I lied, the unwanted 5+ kgs of body mass gained in all the wrong places is a negative achievement. But even the late night struggles, having to juggle work with baking, lack of social life and personal time, and dealing with the negative sides of human nature... looking back, I really didn't anticipate all the extra drama when I first started out and have managed to surpass - it's been awesome! I'm happy with the amount of money I have raised in the set time but I'm most proud of being able to inspire and excite others into giving through my campaign.

I must admit, at times I have felt really burnt out physically and emotionally, but luckily for me baking is therapeutic to a degree. Although my health has suffered from the lack of sleep and stress, I still feel energised when I know there are people out there that care and support the cause that I believe in. Plus, I essentially killed three birds with one stone?!!!!!!!!!!!
  1. Got myself a well for my upcoming 27th birthday!!
  2. Had the opportunity to bake to my hearts content, cleared off a few items from my to-bake's list
  3. Successfully spread the word about the global water crisis around the globe
... and made friends along the way...

A few things I proved and learnt through my experience...

  • Eating cake everyday will make you FAT
  • Lack of sleep everyday will make you FAT and GRUMPY
  • A new habit can be developed with a little persistence
  • There are nice people around
  • God doesn't exist
  • Sugar is addictive
Someone asked me how many marriage proposals have I received since I started this charity work... I can't believe there hasn't been one either! (God doesn't exist)Well, the lines are still open hot-men-of-the-universe, please send your applications titled "will you marry me?" with a photo attached and name your favourite cake to sugar4water@gmail.com ...... jokes aside, seriously, I'd like to thank you all for being so kind and supportive, you know who you are :)

About Blog Action Day 2010
I saw a Charity:Water notice on facebook just before and found out about Blog Action Day 2010 which is held annually on the 15th October where bloggers from everywhere unite and blog about the same issue to bring global awareness. This year's issue is WATER! So it made sense for me to mention about it here... if you're reading this and you blog, please go enlighten your readers about stuff outside their little bubble!

I'm so over preaching about how giving is way more rewarding than receiving (it's true though!) and I've been pleasantly surprised along the way at how infectious and "magnetic" the act of giving is. I encourage everyone to do something like this simply because you can and you get to feel fuzzily empowered. If someone as disorganised as me, someone who really only has four reliable friends can do it, anything is possible! So next time you're feeling generous or lost or can't decide what to splurge on for your own birthday - go buy yourself a well!

I'm both happy and sad, mixed feelings about the end of Sugar4Water, maybe it's just the beginning to something bigger (it has crossed my mind)... but for the time being, I'm focusing on getting my health back on track before I dive into the next random stint. Oh, I should get some tax benefits from the donation I send off to Well Wishers, that's a little "gift" for my efforts from you and the tax man.

Thank you for helping me make a little difference in the global water crisis. It's simple to start your own campaign and you can really do anything to raise money or just awareness, you never know, you might inspire someone out there who's got the cash and generosity!

Okay, I'll finish off now...
Hopefully I'll get notified like they promised when my well gets built, then I can show it off to everyone here :P so y'all can see where your money went! So, check back once in a while...

Meanwhile, stay fuzzy, and remember giving IS receiving.

With lots of sugar and rainbows,
xxx. amy :))))

What next?!

Hi, I know it seems like I've vanished from the face of the earth (or just this blog), but I did write up this long post for the end of the campaign, it just seems a bit out-dated now a whole two weeks later....so I'll re-edit it and hopefully post it up eventually....

I've been rehabbing from cake and baking (really enjoying not having to stress over cake orders, chasing/collecting/begging for donations), but trying very hard to fight my sugar addiction everyday. I get more sleep now and slowly getting back on track with my life... but there's a wedding cake to be made in a couple of weeks time, so I've bought a few wedding cake books online to take advantage of the strong aussie dollar (rarrr!!) hopefully they'll arrive soon and I'll start experimenting with fondants and tiered cakes!

Meanwhile, everyone's been asking me "so amy, what are you doing with all your spare time now?!", as if I had that much spare time before!?!!... my streamlined response is "I didn't have spare time before, I was using my sleep time to bake", now I'm finally getting some sleep :)

Keep an eye out for wedding cake experiments here... soon, if I can be bothered...

Stay fuzzy,
A

Mini Cheesecakes I finally squeezed out!

30 September 2010 (belated post)
a night shot of the cakes in their box before I rushed out again!
Edith's order of mini baked cheesecakes were a disaster the first attempt about a month or two ago?!... actually, I still wasn't happy with this batch but I couldn't post-pone again seeing my campaign ended on the night I finally got this order out of the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She was specific about them not needing sauce/topping/fruits and not to be too sweet as her hubby likes it simple..... so I wasn't able to disguise the imperfections, instead I made little chocolate hearts to happify them, see don't they look cheery?! :D

I'm still not sure whether it's the temperature or the timing that makes them all puffed up like souffles cracking on top and then deflated after cooling sinking in a little in the centre... it's frustrating as this happened the first time too when I was in a mad rush and then postponed re-baking for another month or two?!!! I was hoping the inclusion of a water bath and careful monitoring of time and temperature this time would make perfect cakes, guess I still need more practice....... Luckily, Edith was real patient and understanding with me :P

These four were the better looking ones of the batch, mum and myself personally taste tested two each of the damaged ones for breakfast....

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see Edith in person after nearly 10 years as I couldn't deliver the cakes personally!!!!! has it been that long already since highschool?!!!!!!!! ARGHHHHHHHHHH~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But I guess the cool thing about running this campaign and "advertising" (bombarding everyone) on facebook is that I did get some responses from people who I have kind of lost contact with.

Thank you, Edith :)

My Fair Lady High Tea - Matcha Mousse Cake

25 September 2010 (belated post)

Sue had put in an order for a matcha (green tea) cake with red beans since the early days of the campaign. Finally that high tea with her girl friends she has been talking about finally rolled out last weekend. And it was my pleasure to make the mousse cake, finishing it off with white chocolate "petals".

ladies all dressed up in floral lady stuff @_@!
cross section - a little messy
wow pretty candles!!!

No artificial colouring used, the green is all match powder! I initially sprinkled the powder on the white chocolate petals, but discovered it looked quite nice and "artsy" with it all smudged out casually. The petals were pretty difficult to handle as I made them super thin, melts real easily with the slightest touch so I had to work rather quickly in between refrigeration.

Looks like they had a great time, and Sue said they didn't refrigerate my cake because it looked too pretty to be kept in the fridge... thus the mousse was looking a bit droopy by the time it was photo time I guess... Nonetheless, still interesting to see cross sections of my creations and approval from clients :)

I haven't made the matcha chiffon cake with the recipe I had used before for Jess's cake (left photo: a night shot taken at her birthday earlier this year - my first attempt at a green tea mousse cake), so I might have added too much salt to the cake batter without realising the sugar content was already pretty minimal...anyway, I balanced the sweet consistency out with the mousse and red bean additions.

Thank you Sue and your girl friends for your support!!

Grand Finale @ Work

30 September 2010
A final sugar high at work today... well technically yesterday now that it's past midnight...

To be honest, I was secretly hoping to celebrate the end of the campaign by NOT baking! but a few colleagues have asked about what I was going to do for the last day, I guess people were expecting something special to finish off perhaps... so I thought a last boost and squeeze and push of my wonderful colleagues wouldn't hurt, more funds = more safe drinking water, so I sent out an email asking for volunteer helpers for my grand finale.

Thanks to my baking comrades - Naomi, Natalie, Heidi, Judi, Lucinda and Geoff, we raised $170.80 on the day!!! I was able to finish baking at 10.30pm!!!!!! that is considered very early for me, normal time is around midnight to late torturous hours around 2am... so I really appreciated the help I got and the stuff we managed to put together. Just look at the photos :)

geoff's impressive tart - made from scratch!!!

Geoff kindly sacrificed his time in the kitchen to make this fancy looking and tasty tart from scratch!! especially with a new born at home, I was quite impressed, he's known to be handy around the kitchen I'm glad I included him on the team :)))))) thanks geoff!

Camera shy Judi stuck to her specialty and made scones with berry jam and cream while Heidi was mumbling about her lindt choc tarts not being pretty enough, so I gave them some magic PS-dusting :))) much better?!
naomi wouldn't let me take a photo of her and these :(((
my quick happy looking jaffa cupcakes :P

and my fail safe cake with a little too much white choc

easy to make and tastes like a cheesecake without the guilt!!!!

i didn't have all ingredients for hedgehogs, and had marshmallows so this was a new creation :)

sugar addicts

and we had to use another table... spring rolls also made a last appearance, gone fast as usual

too many options to choose from, everyone was pretty stuffed
We had enough food to take up to level 3, and enough for afternoon tea as well as left-overs for the next day!!! THANK YOU all, everyone at work for being great guinea pigs for the last three months, for all the volunteers who helped bake, for the people who donated and supported without eating cake, for putting up with my frequent emails and giving in to sugar for a great cause! It really has been an awesome three months, time does fly.

I was afraid Bruce was going to make me do a speech which I've been avoiding for so long, luckily he only called me over to congratulate me on prolonging through the whole three month that I had set myself, he said normally people would've given up after a week and everyone's impressed with my persistence. I guess I never expected the return and I just did what I could and the directors and colleagues have all been super supportive from the start - I'm grateful to be working in such an office.

Anyway, too much blabbering.... (got a couple more posts to catch up on!)

THANK YOU CGA!

The Picnic

18 September 2010
not sure how the ? snuck in.....grrr
doing a little promotional posing
In order to boost last minute donations before my campaign deadline, I hosted a blue and white water themed picnic. The plan was to have some fun out in the sun with friends... and to redeem my missing childhood memory of water balloon fights!

I was going to put together the video clips taken on the day, but I think I prefer sleep. I thought I really should update and post this up before my campaign ends and everyone forgets about it. So here's a glimpse of what happened on the day.
busy busy busy

poser andy and the donation jar
Despite the crappy weather on the day and the fact that it was the day that everyone was getting married (thus a lot of friends couldn't make it), we still went ahead just to get it over and done with. I had my picnic! and we raised $430 from optional cash donations on the day!

annie's great action shot! i was drenched and happy :)
Because I didn't have much expectations, I was pleasantly surprised by the turn out. I know, they were all asians, we all look the same in the photos with our black hair and yellow skin. Was nice to meet some new faces.

I love how Annie finally let loose after I "accidentally" hit her with a rebounding bomb. I'm not sure why most of the guests were afraid of water and the light sprinkles of rain... it's just WATER!!!!!!! Still, I'm happy people even showed up as they said they would. There was way too much food prepared, both Jess and I got a bit carried away and a lot of the food was left over but gladly doggy bagged home by hungry attendees.

andy's the biggest poser
Special thanks to my mother who talentedly filled and tied all 100+ water balloons and helped with all the nitty gritties of frying spring rolls, decorating my tarts, and cleaning the mess I made after I left in a mad rush! Also, Jess the expert sandwhich maker for making 60 gourmet sandwhiches delivered in style! ... and thanks to Annie for being in charge of drinks lol... and ofcourse inviting half of the guests on the day and giving up her birthday (sorta) to support the cause. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! ..... I seem to be saying a lot of thank yous these days... thanks to the boys who helped out with lugging things around, thank you all for helping me spread the word about my mission.

Although it was an EXTREMELY disorganised event (organisers ahem*...were nearly an hour late lol... and didn't find a spot to settle... and didn't prepare the games properly and just wing-ed it....) I realised it takes a lot to be the host and caterer and events coordinator all in one! But I think I probably had the most fun at the end, just running around and actually got to enjoy the picnic after most of the people I didn't know had left. It was a great little afternoon to be out and about, if only it wasn't so cold. Still I'm glad it didn't rain out, but I really didn't care if it did, it's just water, would've fitted the theme perfectly :)

And a few more pics to finish off...... (I need to go sleep now)

being chased by wet annie who really wanted to stay dry :P
artistic taping
look! i even bought blue plates and cups! but seriously, what's wrong with asians all standing around?!
boys playing ball

 paul's chucking pose
study group team minus sue :(
annie put me on the spot to make a speech...
and after half of the people left due to sprinkling from the heavens... we did a little cam-whoring :) can you spot the retard?!......... sorry kwing, this one was a bad one of you but i dont look decent in the other ones...
Exhausting effort. Wouldn't want to do it again without proper planning and help!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! ALL WHO SHOWED UP ON THE DAY!

Getting ripped off

Man... I feel totally ripped off by the strong aussie dollar......!!!!!!!!!!!

like TOTALLY!!

Since my first big donation upload, the economy went down a bit below $0.91, then it came back up again after the election... to a bit over $0.91. More than one person told me it wouldn't get much higher, if lucky maybe 92cents... so I uploaded another big chunk of the remaining donations to my US based charity:water campaign site... who would've known..... a few days later $0.955!!!!!!!

I'm still upset.....
:(((((((

US$90 to go.. 7 days left, is someone going to top it up?!

meanwhile, i still have to write a post about the picnic thing that happened over the weekend....there's just a big heap of photos to go through... but keep posted :P

I'm not sure what's going to happen after 7 days, I still have a few cake orders to clear, can't wait!!!!!!

Billy is sweet

15 September 2010
Billy wrote me an email informing me to take a day off baking as he would bring in some cakes and treats for his belated birthday in support of my campaign. A very thoughtful thing to do... for someone who really appreciates bake-free days :P

We still managed to raise $33.65 from only asking a nominal $1 donation. Natalie bought some cakes on behalf of the office for a meeting in the boardroom to help with consumption.

Happy belated birthday and Thank you Billy Byrne!
